Every year, hundreds of thousands of migrant workers leave Tajikistan in search of employment. The money sent back provides a huge boost to the economy. Tajikistan is the most remittance-dependent country in the world. Most of the migrants are married men. So what happens to a married woman left behind? "Behind the Wheel" explores the life of Nigora, an Uzbek woman who must defy prevailing gender norms because her migrant husband engages in an affair and fails to send enough money. No longer able to rely on her husband, Nigora sets to work fixing car tires.
