Breaking the Silence

A film by Ammar Basha (Yemen/2009/12:21).

This film documents the injustices that the "Akhdam" women, or servant women, face in Yemen. The Akhdam are a social group in Yemen who are of African descent, which visibly marks them as a low caste group of people in Yemen. The Akhdam women are easy targets of violence, sexual assaults, and abuse. There is hardly any legal or social consequence to these crimes. This video, produced by Sisters Arab Forum for Human Rights and WITNESS, features the stories and voices of three Akhdam women, Haddah, Qobol, and Om Ali.
