About Ghafar Azad
Ghafar Azad was born in 1985 in Afghanistan. In 2006, he studied Screenplay Writing, Directing, Editing, and Camera at the Afghan TOLO Filmmaker Lab, conducted by Hollywood writer, director and producer J.F. Lawton and Afghan-French writer and director Atiq Rahimi. Ghafar Azad earned his bachelor’s in cinema and art from the University of Southern California. Before his career in filmmaking, he graduated from the Teacher Training Institute- Kabul.
In 2008, Ghafar was invited by Asian Film Academy to attend a film training workshop in South Korea. And in 2009, he was invited by the Stayajit Ray Film Institute- Kolkata to participate in a film training course. He directed Salam Drama (Seasons 1 & 2) for Lemar TV; The Ministry for TOLO TV; and the hugely popular action police drama, Oqaab Chaar(Eagle Four) for TOLO TV, which earned the Special Jury Prize at the Seoul Drama Awards.
In 2011, Ghafar’s film “A Letter to Light” was selected to take part in the Sheffield Doc Fest Market in the UK, as part of the Sheffield Documentary Festival. It also won Best Edit and Special Jury prize for innovation and empiricism at the Human Rights Film Festival- Kabul and won Best Film Overall, Best Narration and Audience Choice in Mehregan Film Festival- Kabul (2014).
In 2012, Ghafar’s film “End of Story” was selected to take part in the Berlin Talent Campus in Germany, was an Official Selection in Eastern Breeze International Film Festival in Canada (2013), won Best Actress in the Human Rights Film Festival- Kabul (2013), and Best Film, Best Actress, and Best Camera Work at the Women’s International Film Festival in Herat, Afghanistan (2014). Ghafar also worked as an Assistant Director in the feature film “Zwischen Welten” (Between Worlds), directed by Feo Aladag, which was an official selection at the Berlin International Film Festival (2014).
