VALADON'S POSTEROUS: 'Is This Honor?' - Dalia Odeh

November 9, 2010

Dalia Odeh, first time filmmaker from Jordan and filmmaker in competition in Women's Voices from the Muslim World: A Short-Film Festival, discusses her feelings about making a documentary addressing the abuse that women suffer in many Muslim and Arab countries in the name of "family honor." It is quite appropriate, then, that she asked the question which is also the title of her film, "Is This Honor?" It was vital that she bring this issue to all our attention. Too many women suffer abuse, rape and murder, most by people with whom they are familiar and that leaves us with one more question: Why do we let this happen?

November 9, 2010—I had the pleasure of speaking with Dalia Odeh, first time filmmaker from Jordan, and I asked her to tell me how she felt about making her documentary about the abuse that women suffer in many Muslim and Arab countries around the world in the name of what is referred to as "family honor." It is quite appropriate, then, that she asked the question which is also the title of her film, Is This Honor ? More importantly, it was vital that she not only ask that question, but that she bring this issue to all our attention. Too many women suffer abuse, rape and murder, most by people with whom they are familiar and that leaves us with one more question: Why do we let this happen? This is what she told me about the reason for her film and the sentiment behind it - thank you, Dalia:

Well, there isn't much to say, but I've always been really troubled with the idea of women (and sometimes, men) being killed to restore a disgraced family "honor" especially when there is NO clear definition for it.. and how all this is leading to an increase in so-called "honor" crimes and how they always attach it to Islam, which is totally wrong. I'm not a director and I haven't even studied filmmaking at school.. I just participated in a couple of workshops. This film was the outcome of one of them. So it's my first (explains all the editing glitches! lol). The film was filmed in several places in Amman, Jordan. I tried my best to visit all, from the very conservative areas to the really "liberal" ones. Surprisingly, some of the most troubling answers were from those who were supposed to be open-minded! My hope is to show how deeply troubled our society's mentality is, and that if we want to stand against "honor" crimes and put an end to them, we need to work at the roots!
