Muslim Women Speak Out

December 10, 2013

From gang rape in Tahrir Square to sexual violence in war-torn Syria, the political upheaval in the Middle East has seen the perpetration of heinous abuses of women’s rights. At the same time, it has drawn attention to the systemic gender inequality and everyday abuses women suffer across the region.

But Heidi Basch-Harod, Executive Director of the NGO Women’s Voices Now, finds reason to hope.

In the August 2013 episode of Diwaniyya“Muslim Women Speak,” we discuss the state of women’s rights and freedom of expression in the Middle East, and how Islam could improve the status of women. Listen to the podcast here.

Diwaniyya is the podcast of the Moshe Dayan Center for Middle Eastern and African Studies at Tel Aviv University. Each month the show produces thought-provoking conversations on Middle East culture, history and politics.
