Voice of a Woman Living with HIV

Leila is a Muslim woman and a single mother who was infected with HIV by her drug-addict husband. In 2005, treatment and medication for HIV and AIDS were made free of charge in Malaysia, where a surviving Leila works for the Malaysian AIDS Council to help others in her same siituation.

About the Malaysian AIDS Council

The Malaysian AIDS Council (MAC) was established in 1992 to serve as an umbrella organization to support and coordinate the efforts of non-governmental and other organizations working on HIV/AIDS issues in Malaysia. MAC works in partnership with government agencies, the private sector and international organizations to ensure a committed and effective response to HIV/AIDS issues in Malaysia. The primary objectives of MAC are to:

  • Increase awareness of HIV/AIDS

  • Prevent the spread of HIV

  • Eliminate discrimination, stigma and prejudice associated with HIV/AIDS

  • Promote and protect the rights of those made vulnerable by HIV/AIDS

  • Ensure the highest possible quality of life for those with HIV/AIDS

  • Provide care and support to individuals with HIV/AIDS
