About RECLAIMING

SYNOPSIS

The Galápagos Islands seen like never before… through the eyes of women.
A friendship bonded by two things — volcanos and giant tortoises and a legacy written by science. “Journey Back to Alcedo”, tells a story of unconditional love between two intrepid 70-year-old best friends on their last ascend together to the place where it all started, and the legacy they leave to young scientists.
Today, only 13% of the 33,000 inhabitants in the world’s most famous natural laboratory are women working in science. In the face of climate change and its profound impacts on women, this film highlights the urgent need for more women in conservation and science, especially in fragile and unique environments like the Galápagos Islands.

Calls to Action:

As a child from the Galápagos Islands, I spent most of my time outside, swimming with sea lions and marine iguanas, collecting dead insects and plants making up scientific names for them to store them in jars in my basement. I spent most of my time surrounded by nature and found comfort mostly around animals. After a few years, becoming a naturalist guide introduced me to amazing people with inspiring stories.

The story of Lynn and Tui was one that hit close to home, that inspired me as a young woman in science and that has the power to inspire many more. Through their tenacious character and triumphant tales, we aim to visibilize their story and pass along their legacy to new generations. With the goal to inspire more girls and women to pursue the field of science and conservation.
