About EXPECTING YOUNG

“Expecting Young” is a powerful short documentary following Bonnie Ayala, a makeup artist and storyteller, who became a mother at age 13. One of many identities, being a young mom does not define her; instead, Bonnie’s strength, resilience, and multifaceted life challenges stereotypes and illuminates a hopeful, human story of transformation and empowerment.

About the Filmmakers

EXPECTING YOUNG filmmakers - Dalia Olshanky

My name is Dalia, which means “olive branch” in Aramaic, a symbol of peace, growth, and vitality. My mom once told me confidence is like a tree: each life experience helps it grow new branches. For me, those branches are rooted in the arts.

During the COVID lockdown in 4th grade, I was isolated at home. To cope, I created characters called Pompozins using pom poms, sequins, and pipe cleaners. Each had a handmade habitat, and I gifted them to friends and family. These creations sparked my confidence and revealed my love for crafting and imagination.

Performing is another passion. In 8th grade, I played Ms. Honey in Matilda and competed in drama festivals. I’ve also sung with the MUSYCA Children’s Choir since age five, performing locally and internationally. Through music, I’ve connected with people from around the world—sometimes without even sharing a language.
Art has been my constant, during hard times and joyful ones. It’s helped me build confidence, form community, and inspire others.

Now, I want to explore filmmaking as a new branch on my confidence tree, using storytelling to unite people and create meaningful change.

EXPECTING YOUNG filmmakers - Kasey Cameron Jusay

My name is Kasey Cameron Jusay, and I’m 16 years old. Growing up in Encino, a mostly Jewish and Persian community, I was often the only full Asian and practicing Christian in my grade. I felt like an outsider and was sometimes made fun of for being Asian. To fit in, I tried to hide parts of my identity and change how I acted, but this only made me feel more disconnected from myself.

High school was a turning point. I met others who shared my culture and background, which helped me embrace who I really am. I realized I didn’t need to change to belong.

Faith has also been central to my journey. I was the only student consistently going to church while many classmates didn’t practice. I often felt left out, especially when friends urged me to skip church. This caused me to struggle with my faith and feel resentful. But when my family switched churches, I found a supportive Christian community my age. This renewed my faith and helped me grow through regular church attendance and Bible study.

Now, I’m proud of my culture and faith. These challenges shaped me and continue to guide me toward becoming the person I’m meant to be.

EXPECTING YOUNG filmmakers - Naomi Nuno

Naomi Nuno is an upcoming senior at Alliance Leichtman Levine High School. After graduating, she plans to attend college to pursue a career as a sonographer, an architect, or potentially an actress if she feels drawn to that path. Naomi is an athlete who has participated in four different sports during high school. Her experiences have taught her valuable lessons, including skill development, teamwork, dedication, commitment, improvement, and leadership. She served as the captain of her high school’s inaugural girls’ flag football team.

Passionate about helping her community and driving change, Naomi has volunteered at donation drives, including those at The Dream Center in Los Angeles and through her church. She is also a strong advocate for women making a difference. As a Latina seeking to create impact, she participated in a non-profit organization called Girls Voices Now, where she co-directed and produced a film focused on teen pregnancy and mental health.
