Who Is Pakhshan Azizi?

Pakhshan Azizi (born 7 August 1984 in Mahabad, Iran) is a prominent Kurdish-Iranian human rights activist and social worker. Her work, particularly in supporting women and children in refugee camps, has earned her international recognition. However, her activism has also led to her being unjustly sentenced to death by the Iranian government.

A Life Dedicated to Humanitarian Work.

Azizi graduated from Allameh Tabataba’i University with a degree in social work. Her career took her to the frontlines of humanitarian crises, where she worked tirelessly to provide aid and hope to the most vulnerable. Her dedication was especially evident in her efforts in northeast Syria, assisting refugees and victims of conflict.

Despite the challenges, Azizi remained committed to her mission. Her work with the Kurdish Red Crescent and other humanitarian organizations was not only about providing immediate relief but also about advocating for the rights and dignity of those she served.

The 2023 Arrest and Sentencing.

In August 2023, Azizi was arrested at her family home in Tehran by Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence. Accused of “armed rebellion against the state” and alleged affiliations with the Kurdistan Free Life Party (PJAK), she was subjected to solitary confinement and reported torture. Her death sentence, confirmed in July 2024, sparked international outcry.

Azizi’s legal representatives and family have vehemently denied the charges, presenting evidence of her humanitarian work as a social worker. Despite this, the Iranian judiciary has continued to uphold her sentence.

International Outcry and Support.

Azizi’s case has garnered widespread attention and condemnation. Human rights organizations, including Amnesty International and the Center for Human Rights in Iran, have called for her release. The United Nations has also voiced serious concerns about her treatment and the validity of the charges against her.
