Vanessa Nakate: The Woman Who Amplified Africa's Voice in Climate Justice.
Vanessa Nakate’s name often sparks curiosity. Known for her solitary climate strikes in Uganda and a high-profile controversy at the World Economic Forum, her life story is one of extraordinary determination, resilience, and societal skepticism toward African voices in the global fight against climate change.
Who Is Vanessa Nakate ?
Vanessa Nakate is a Ugandan climate justice activist who gained international recognition for founding the Youth for Future Africa and the Rise Up Movement. Born on November 15, 1996, in Kampala, she graduated with a degree in business administration from Makerere University Business School. As a Christian, she draws inspiration from her faith, viewing stewardship of the Earth as a responsibility to protect the planet and its people.
From a young age, Nakate was alarmed by the unusually high temperatures and environmental challenges in Uganda. In December 2018, she began voicing concerns about climate impacts on her country’s agriculture-dependent communities. She launched her activism in January 2019 with a lone strike outside Uganda’s Parliament, protesting inaction on the climate crisis. For months, she stood alone, but her social media calls gradually drew other youth to join, highlighting threats to the Congolian rainforests and beyond.
