Roots in Advocacy and Education.

Born on December 29, 1973, in Auckland to a family of urban Māori activists—including her father, actor Rawiri Paratene—Marama Mere-Ana Davidson grew up amid frequent moves across New Zealand, from Wellington to Dunedin, Christchurch, and eventually settling in Whirinaki, Hokianga, at age nine. This nomadic childhood instilled a deep connection to her Ngāti Porou, Te Rarawa, and Ngāpuhi iwi.

She pursued higher education, earning a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Auckland and a Graduate Diploma in International Diplomacy for Indigenous Studies from Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi. Before politics, she worked in community roles, including with the Human Rights Commission, focusing on indigenous rights and social issues.

Married with six children and three grandchildren, she has long resided in Manurewa, South Auckland, grounding her work in family and community values.

Ascent in Green Party Politics.

Davidson’s political journey began earnestly with the Green Party, entering Parliament as a list MP in 2015 after Russel Norman’s resignation. She contested electorates like Ikaroa-Rāwhiti in 2013 and Tāmaki Makaurau in 2014 and 2020, steadily rising in party rankings. By 2018, she succeeded Metiria Turei as female co-leader, partnering first with James Shaw and later Chlöe Swarbrick. Under her co-leadership, the Greens achieved a record 15 seats in the 2023 election.

From 2020 to 2023, she served as Minister for the Prevention of Family and Sexual Violence—the first such role—and Associate Minister for Housing, targeting homelessness. Post-2023, in opposition, she holds portfolios in conservation, child poverty reduction, and social investment.

Key Campaigns and Public Stands.

Davidson has been vocal on critical issues, leading protests against the TPPA in 2015 and advocating for climate action, fair trade, and Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles. In 2024, she introduced the Consumer Guarantees (Right to Repair) Amendment Bill, which passed its first reading in February 2025 with cross-party support but was later discharged in October following a procedural issue.

Her tenure has also been marked by controversy, including 2018 threats after opposing far-right speakers, a 2021 visit to a Mongrel Mob event to discuss racism, and a 2023 comment on violence by “white cis men” amid a protest assault, which drew both criticism and support for highlighting systemic issues.

Overcoming Personal Health Challenges.

In June 2024, Davidson publicly shared her breast cancer diagnosis, undergoing a partial mastectomy and stepping back from duties. Drawing inspiration from the late Green MP Fa’anānā Efeso Collins, she made a resilient return to politics on February 3, 2025, at Waitangi, emphasizing community strength and progressive values. This period underscored her commitment to grassroots action, as highlighted in her 2025 AGM speech.
