Film Review.
“Womb on Rent uncovers the difficult realities of a woman’s struggle to survive in the surrogacy industry, where her body becomes a commodity in the eyes of society.”
Womb on Rent is a compelling documentary that reveals the harsh truths about the exploitation of women in the surrogacy industry. Directed by Ishani K. Dutta, the film follows the story of a mother of three who, in an effort to support her family, decides to rent her womb. As she navigates this emotional and challenging decision, she finds herself in a system that profits off her body, while society looks down on her for simply trying to survive.
The documentary offers a raw look at the world of surrogacy, which is often seen as empowering, but for many women, it is a painful experience that brings more hardship than hope. These women are often driven by their need to provide for their families but are subjected to judgment and moral questioning for their choices. In the eyes of society, they are seen not for their efforts or sacrifices, but as nothing more than vessels for carrying another person’s child.
Womb on Rent is powerful because it shows the emotional complexity of the surrogacy process and its impact on women. It goes beyond the business of surrogacy and exposes the deeper issue of gender inequality. These women, despite making a choice to help their families, are treated with disrespect simply because of their gender. The film shows how these women’s lives are shaped by a system that sees them only as their reproductive abilities, overlooking their personal struggles and emotional needs.
The film also highlights how many women enter surrogacy not as a choice, but out of necessity. The economic pressure to support their families forces them into a position where they have little control over the way they are treated. The story is a clear reminder that even in a modern society, women’s bodies are often treated as property, especially when they can be used to make money.
Through this honest portrayal, Womb on Rent gives voice to the many women who have been silenced by this industry. It challenges the audience to rethink how we view women’s bodies and urges us to recognize their worth beyond just their physical contributions. This film is not just about exposing the exploitation but also about pushing for a conversation about how we treat women in vulnerable situations.
By bringing this issue to light, Womb on Rent forces us to reflect on the larger systems of inequality and exploitation that continue to affect women around the world. It is a call for change, a call for a future where women are valued for who they are, not just what they can give.
Watch Womb on Rent and take part in the discussion about the treatment of women in the surrogacy industry, and help push for a world where women’s voices are heard and respected.

“If any female feels she needs anything beyond herself to legitimate and validate her existence, she is already giving away her power to be self-defining.”
