Historically, employment status has had a strong gender dimension, with women more likely to be in vulnerable occupational situations. Where women are blatantly treated as second class citizens, they are seldom offered opportunities that would ensure a self-sustainable future outside the context of marriage and the extended family. With global migration and poverty levels on the rise, women are often left to fend for themselves, either by their husbands or their families.
